About Lenny K
From early childhood, Lenny knew that all he wanted to do was to be involved in music. Lenny K (Leonid Khmel) was born and raised in Kiev, Ukraine (former Soviet Union). Before he could speak, he could sing. At the age of 6 he started playing the piano at the Lysenko specialized music school and at 7 he added the violin as his main instrument and studied with a renown violin teacher Benjamin Zeldis. During his childhood and teenage years, Lenny won several local violin
competitions and appeared in 2 motion pictures in which he also played the violin.
Soon after the fall of the Soviet Union, Lenny and his family were fortunate to immigrate to the United States. Shortly
after his arrival, still a teenager, Lenny started performing
with various bands in New York City. He continued his music studies at the City University of New York where one of his teachers was a renown composer John Corigliano. After studying composition and orchestration with him for a couple of years, John recommended that Lenny continued his studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. While studying film scoring, music production, engineering, and music synthesis at Berklee, Lenny continued his performances. He shortly worked for a musical theater at MIT, was a part of Boston Chamber Ensemble and started performing regularly with a soon-to-be renowned new age composer Tim Janis.
Upon moving back to New York, Lenny built his recording studio and recorded his 4 CD's. For the past 17 years, Lenny has been performing music from these CD's regularly at various events, shows, festivals, fairs and even shopping centers. Lenny also does some other freelance projects such as directing musical theater, performing for special events on his own and together with his ensembles.
